Biography / Discography
Afric Simone (born Henrique Joaquim Simone, also credited as Afric Simon) is a Mozambican vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, dancer and performance artist. Performing solo, he works in the Afro-disco and pop style that made him one of the best-known African recording artists in Europe during the 1970s, most widely recognized for his hit single “Hafanana”.
Simone entered the European charts in 1975 with “Ramaya”, quickly followed the same year by “Hafanana”, the song that became his signature international hit. Between 1975 and 1980 he built a large following on both sides of the Iron Curtain, touring extensively across the Eastern Bloc, including the USSR, Poland, the GDR and Czechoslovakia, alongside dates across Western Europe. His live career includes sold-out performances at major international venues such as L’Olympia in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London and Carnegie Hall in New York, a rare feat among Mozambican-born musicians of his era.
Decades after his chart breakthrough, “Hafanana” remains a recognizable disco-era standard and continues to be referenced within African and European pop music. Afric Simone is available to book for festivals, corporate events and private shows.
