Billy Dean (born William Harold Dean Jr. on April 2, 1962, in Quincy, Florida) is an American country music singer-songwriter whose career spans decades and whose voice has become a beloved fixture in the genre. Growing up in a musical family—his father led a band called The Country Rocks—Billy began performing at the age of eight and spent his youth touring the Gulf Coast with local bands. He briefly attended college on a basketball scholarship but soon returned to his first passion: music.
His national break came via the television talent competition Star Search, where he won the Best Male Vocalist category in 1988. This victory led to a recording contract and the release of his debut album Young Man in 1990. That album produced hits such as “Only Here for a Little While” and “Somewhere in My Broken Heart”, the latter winning Song of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 1992.
