Brian Kainoa Makoa McKnight (formerly Brian Kelly McKnight) was born June 5, 1969, and is an R&B vocalist, producer, and instrumentalist. Raised in Orlando, Florida, and based in Los Angeles, McKnight developed a distinctive vocal presence through a strong upper register, impressive vocal power, and intricate melismatic phrasing techniques. Over a career spanning three decades, he has accumulated 16 Grammy Award nominations while releasing music through major labels and collaborating with prominent artists.
McKnight launched his professional career in 1992 with the debut single ‘The Way Love Goes.’ Early momentum came from ‘One Last Cry,’ which reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1993, he recorded a duet with Vanessa Williams titled ‘Love Is’ for the Beverly Hills, 90210 soundtrack, which climbed to number three on the chart. His 1997 collaboration ‘You Should Be Mine’ (with Mase) achieved top-20 status. The ballad ‘Back at One’ became McKnight’s signature achievement, peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1999 and remains his highest-charting single.
