Dan Balan (born Dan Mihai Bălan, 6 February 1979) is a Moldovan musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer best known for founding the Eurodance band O-Zone. Born in Chişinău, Moldova, Balan began his musical career with the gothic doom metal band Inferialis before transitioning to commercial pop music and establishing O-Zone in 1998 with vocalist Petru Jelihovschi. The duo quickly achieved success in Moldova, with seven tracks from their debut album reaching number one on local radio charts.
O-Zone achieved global prominence with the 2003 single ‘Dragostea din tei’ (also known as ‘Numa Numa Song’), written and produced by Balan. The track became one of the best-selling singles in music history, topping charts in over 32 countries, selling more than 12 million copies worldwide, and earning multi-platinum certifications across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The song’s popularity was amplified when Rihanna and T.I. sampled its melody for their 2008 hit ‘Live Your Life,’ earning Balan a Grammy nomination in 2009—the first and only Moldovan ever nominated. O-Zone disbanded in 2005 at the height of their fame.
Following O-Zone’s breakup, Balan launched a solo career encompassing multiple musical styles and personas, including the experimental alter-ego Crazy Loop. His solo work achieved notable success in Eastern European and Russian markets, with multiple chart-topping singles including ‘Lendo Calendo’ and ‘Lepestkami Slöz,’ and he won multiple Golden Gramophone Awards, Russia’s most prestigious music honor. In 2014, he began recording the album ‘Freedom, Part 2’ at prestigious London studios including Abbey Road and AIR Studios, collaborating with world-class session musicians and orchestral arrangers.
