Marc Martel is a Canadian solo rock vocalist born in Montreal, Quebec, on November 16, 1976. He rose to prominence as co-founder and lead vocalist of the Christian rock band Downhere (1999–2012), which earned multiple Juno Awards and a Dove Award across ten studio albums. Following the band’s hiatus in 2013, Martel transitioned to a solo career and became internationally recognized for his striking vocal resemblance to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, initially through viral YouTube videos including a 2011 audition for the Queen Extravaganza Live Tour that garnered over 23 million views.
Martel’s professional work has increasingly centered on Queen tribute performances, appearing with Queen Extravaganza, Ultimate Queen Celebration, and One Vision of Queen. His prominence in this capacity led to his vocal contributions to the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody, where producer Graham King noted the resemblance was so precise that listeners could close their eyes and believe it was Freddie Mercury singing. Beyond tribute work, Martel has maintained an active solo recording career, releasing albums including Impersonator (2014), Thunderbolt & Lightning (2018), and Forte (2021), alongside multiple EPs and collaborations. In 2019, his rendition of “Silver Bells” with Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith achieved a No. 1 position on the Billboard Christian AC Monitor charts.
Martel is available to book for festivals, corporate events, concert tours, and private performances.
