About Michael Daves
Biography / Discography
Michael Daves is an American guitarist, singer, and one of the most compelling figures in contemporary bluegrass and Americana. Based in New York City, he is known for his signature “high-lonesome” vocal tone and fiery, improvisational approach to acoustic music. Unlike traditionalists, Michael approaches bluegrass with a raw, spontaneous edge, blending precision with emotional intensity. He performs with the spirit of a rock musician while staying deeply rooted in American roots tradition.
Growing up in Georgia, he was surrounded by bluegrass, gospel, and folk, learning harmonies and guitar techniques from local musicians. After moving to New York, he became a central figure in the city’s acoustic scene, known for late-night jam sessions that blurred the line between tradition and innovation. His unique sound caught the attention of world-class musicians, leading to collaborations with artists such as Chris Thile, with whom he released an acclaimed duo album and toured internationally.
Michael’s performances are built around connection and improvisation — each show is slightly different, shaped by the moment and the audience. His guitar playing is fast, expressive, and rhythmically daring, while his vocals carry the soul of Appalachian roots music. He brings an authenticity that feels both timeless and contemporary.
On stage, Michael balances technical mastery with emotional storytelling. His artistry proves that bluegrass isn’t a museum genre — it is living, evolving, and thrilling.
