About O-Zone
Biography / Discography
O-Zone is a Moldovan eurodance pop group formed in 1999, consisting of Dan Bălan, Radu Sîrbu, and Arsenie Todiraș. Originating as a duo of Bălan and Petru Jelihovschi, the group solidified its official lineup when Todiraș and Sîrbu joined, creating one of Moldova’s first internationally successful musical acts. Relocating to Bucharest, Romania in 2002 to pursue wider recognition, the group rapidly achieved stardom with their upbeat single “Despre Tine” (“About You”), which topped the Romanian Top 100 chart for three consecutive weeks in 2003.
O-Zone’s global breakthrough came with “Dragostea Din Tei” (“Love in the Linden Trees”), released in 2003. The song topped the Romanian singles chart and subsequently became a European phenomenon in 2004, reaching number one in nearly a dozen countries and achieving top-ten status in multiple others, including number three in the United Kingdom. Though the song achieved only moderate airplay in the United States, it gained significant cultural visibility through the viral “Numa Numa Dance” internet video. Their accompanying studio album DiscO-Zone, released in 2003, achieved platinum status across Europe and exceptional success in Japan, where it topped the Oricon charts and sold over one million copies. In total, the group has sold over 12 million copies of “Dragostea Din Tei” worldwide and over 2.5 million copies of DiscO-Zone.
O-Zone disbanded on 13 January 2005, citing personal reasons, after their final European concert at the 2005 Golden Stag Festival in Romania. The group reunited for occasional concerts in 2017 and 2019, and announced a 2024 summer tour performed as a tribute band featuring original member Arsenie alongside two dancers.
