About Piers Lane
Biography / Discography
Piers Lane is an Australian classical pianist and Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, born in London in 1958. A soloist and chamber musician of international reputation, Lane is best known for his extensive discography on the Hyperion label and his interpretations of romantic-era piano concertos and chamber works.
Lane’s professional career began in 1977, the year he won the Best Australian Pianist award at the Sydney International Piano Competition. He joined the Royal Academy of Music faculty in 1989, where he has maintained a teaching position alongside an active performance schedule. His recordings encompass works by composers including Eyvind Alnæs, Christian Sinding, and Malcolm Williamson, and he has performed with leading orchestras including the London Philharmonic and City of Birmingham Symphony. Lane’s chamber collaborations include violinist Tasmin Little, mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, and other distinguished musicians.
In 2007, Lane became artistic director of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville, and in 2015 he was appointed artistic director of the Sydney International Piano Competition. He was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia in 2012 for distinguished service to the performing arts. He is available to book for concert performances, festival appearances, and private engagements.
