Biography / Discography
Yanni, born Yiannis Chryssomallis (also transliterated Giannis Chrysomallis) on November 14, 1954, in Kalamata, Greece, is a composer, keyboardist, pianist and producer known for predominantly instrumental music that blends jazz, classical, soft rock and world music. He is credited with pioneering the pairing of electronic synthesizers with a full symphony orchestra, drawing on musicians and instruments from multiple cultures to create an eclectic, cross-genre instrumental sound within the new age genre.
Yanni built his reputation through large-scale concerts filmed at historic and iconic sites, most notably Live at the Acropolis in Athens, which became one of the best-selling music concert videos of all time. He went on to record and perform at locations including the Taj Mahal, the Forbidden City in Beijing, the Kremlin, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Egyptian pyramids at Giza, pairing his orchestral-electronic compositions with the visual scale of each setting.
Across his recording career Yanni has placed at least sixteen albums at number one on Billboard’s New Age Albums chart and received two Grammy Award nominations.
