Battles are an American experimental and math-rock band formed in New York City in the early 2000s. The group was founded by guitarist and keyboardist Ian Williams (formerly of Don Caballero and Storm & Stress) and drummer John Stanier (known for Helmet and Tomahawk). Their vision was to merge rock instrumentation with electronic manipulation and complex rhythmic structures, creating a futuristic, hybrid sound unlike anything else on the scene.
Their debut album Mirrored (2007) became a milestone in experimental rock, introducing the mesmerizing single “Atlas,” which combined heavy live drumming with looping guitar patterns and processed vocals. The release earned critical acclaim and positioned Battles as innovators in the post-rock and electronic crossover movement.
In 2011, they released Gloss Drop, featuring collaborations with guest vocalists that expanded their sound palette. Later albums, La Di Da Di (2015) and Juice B Crypts (2019), pushed their experimentation even further — mixing live looping, sampling, and advanced sequencing to build intricate rhythmic worlds in real time.
Known for their intense live performances, Battles transform every stage into a sonic laboratory — precise, unpredictable, and deeply engaging. Their music is both mathematical and emotional, balancing human energy with machine-like precision. Through constant evolution and technical mastery, Battles remain one of the most innovative and respected acts in modern experimental music.
