BERTHA: Grateful Drag is a groundbreaking musical collective formed in Nashville, Tennessee, composed of queer and allied musicians who perform the music of the Grateful Dead in full drag. Founded by Melody Walker and Caitlin Doyle shortly after the COVID-19 lockdown, BERTHA emerged as an act of joy, protest, and solidarity — a powerful response to anti-drag legislation in Tennessee and a vivid celebration of queer culture through music.
The band features a dynamic lineup of talented performers — lead guitar, keys, bass, drums and an outstanding harmony trio of “Berthas.” Despite their flashy appearance — wigs, dresses and stage personas — the music is the real deal: intricate harmonies, skillful instrumentation and authentic devotion to the Dead’s repertoire. More than just a cover band, BERTHA performs two-set shows with deep cuts and fan-favorites, re-interpreting jam-band classics through a fresh, inclusive lens.
Highlights of their journey include high-profile festival appearances and benefit concerts raising funds for LGBTQ+ causes. Their show at Newport Folk Festival made headlines for its high energy and inclusive ethos. Reviewers describe the band as “far from a gimmick” and recognize their musicianship as “some of the best harmonies and vocals of any Grateful Dead tribute act.”
The band’s core mission is three-fold: honour the legacy of the Dead in their improvisational spirit, provide a vibrant drag-themed live experience, and support marginalized communities through performance. Audiences are encouraged to dress up, join the party and experience a joyful blend of music, movement and empowerment. With their rapidly growing fanbase and touring schedule expanding coast-to-coast, BERTHA: Grateful Drag is carving out a unique place in the live-music landscape where authenticity meets spectacle.
