Formed in Melbourne in 2006, Big Scary is the creative partnership of Tom Iansek (vocals, guitar, keys) and Joanna “Jo” Syme (drums, vocals). What began in a suburban living room with acoustic guitars and egg shakers soon evolved into a versatile and expansive sound: fuzz-soaked garage rock, piano-led pop anthems, atmospheric instrumentals and electronic elements all have found a home in their catalogue.
Their debut album Vacation (2011) marked their arrival on the Australian charts and laid the groundwork for their explorations of sound and texture. With their second album Not Art (2013) they achieved major recognition—it won the Australian Music Prize and earned nominations across major national awards. This achievement cemented their status as one of Australia’s most innovative acts. The album pushed boundaries with layered production, ambient textures and vocal interplay between Iansek and Syme.
In 2016, Big Scary released Animal, an ambitious four-part record exploring themes of nature, instinct and human behaviour; the album reached the Top 5 in the Australian charts and showed their ability to combine thoughtful concept with wide appeal. Recent albums, including Daisy (2021) and Me and You (2022), continue their trajectory of growth—shifting between lush synth landscapes and more minimalist piano-driven introspection. The duo’s live performances — whether as a two-piece or augmented band — are widely praised for their emotional intensity, crisp musicianship and unpredictable dynamics.
Beyond the studio and stage, Iansek and Syme have shown a strong DIY ethic: self-producing, experimenting freely, and releasing music on their own label Pieater. Their versatility and willingness to shift across genres keeps them fresh and relevant. With a growing international fanbase, festival appearances around the world and critical acclaim spanning over a decade, Big Scary stand as one of Australia’s premier contemporary indie acts—equally suitable for intimate venues and major event stages alike.
