Black Kids is an American indie-pop band formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2006, known for their upbeat blend of new wave, synth-pop, and indie rock. The group consists of Reggie Youngblood (vocals, guitar), Ali Youngblood (keyboards, vocals), Dawn Watley (keyboards, vocals), Owen Holmes (bass), and Kevin Snow (drums). Their sound recalls the vibrant energy of 1980s pop, infused with modern indie sensibility and youthful exuberance.
The band rose to fame in 2007 with the release of their self-recorded EP “Wizard of Ahhhs”, which spread virally online thanks to early music blogs. Its catchy single “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You” became a cult hit and propelled Black Kids into international attention. The song’s mix of ironic storytelling and irresistible rhythm captured the essence of indie pop’s golden era.
Following this success, they signed with Almost Gold/Columbia Records and released their debut full-length album “Partie Traumatic” (2008), produced by Bernard Butler (formerly of Suede). The record received widespread praise for its danceable beats, clever lyrics, and playful charm, earning them slots at Coachella, Glastonbury, and Lollapalooza, as well as television appearances on Later… with Jools Holland and Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
After a brief hiatus, the band returned with their sophomore album “Rookie” (2017), which reflected a more mature yet equally melodic approach. Their live performances remain magnetic — full of colorful energy, witty banter, and an irresistible sense of nostalgia that bridges indie rock and pure pop pleasure.
With their trademark mix of humor, charisma, and synth-driven joy, Black Kids continue to charm audiences across generations. Their music is an invitation to dance, laugh, and remember why indie pop can still feel so alive.
