Black Lips are an American garage rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1999, by high-school friends Cole Alexander (vocals, guitar) and Jared Swilley (bass, vocals). Often described as the pioneers of “flower punk,” the band became known for their unfiltered sound, rebellious energy, and outrageous live performances that blur the line between chaos and art. Their lineup later solidified with Oakley Munson (drums) and Jeff Clarke (guitar), creating the foundation for their signature mix of punk rock and Southern swagger.
Emerging from the early-2000s Atlanta underground scene, Black Lips gained cult status for their DIY ethos and raw, lo-fi recordings. Their early albums, including “Let It Bloom” (2005) and “Good Bad Not Evil” (2007), were embraced by indie and punk audiences alike, fueled by anthems such as “Bad Kids” and “O Katrina!”. These releases established their reputation as the wild, unpredictable heart of American garage rock.
Their 2011 album “Arabia Mountain”, produced by Mark Ronson, expanded their sound with polished production and sharper songwriting while maintaining their trademark grit. In later releases such as “Sing in a World That’s Falling Apart” (2020), the band embraced country, blues, and Americana influences — proof of their versatility and evolving spirit.
Black Lips’ concerts are legendary for their high energy and theatrical antics — from crowd-surfing chaos to unexpected instruments and spontaneous humor. They’ve toured relentlessly across the U.S., Europe, and Latin America, performing at Coachella, Primavera Sound, and countless underground clubs worldwide.
Over two decades into their career, Black Lips remain one of the most authentic, fearless, and entertaining bands in rock music. Their sound embodies rebellion, fun, and the raw joy of live performance — making them an unmissable act for audiences craving something real.
