Black Violin is an American musical duo comprised of Wilner “Wil B” Baptiste (viola) and Kevin “Kev Marcus” Sylvester (violin), known for their innovative fusion of classical music, hip-hop, R&B, and soul. Hailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, they met in high school orchestra class, bonded over their shared love of strings, and later honed their craft at university — Kev Marcus at Florida International University and Wil B at Florida State University. Their mission soon became clear: to shatter stereotypes and prove that classical instruments could groove, inspire, and unite audiences everywhere.

Black Violin rose to fame after winning Showtime at the Apollo in 2005, an achievement that launched them into the national spotlight. Their self-titled debut album followed, showcasing their signature sound — violin and viola layered over hip-hop beats and lush orchestral textures. Their unique style caught the attention of icons such as Alicia Keys, Kanye West, and Lupe Fiasco, with whom they have since collaborated and toured.

Their albums, including “Stereotypes” (2015), “Take the Stairs” (2019), and “Give Thanks” (2020), merge technical excellence with social consciousness. Stereotypes earned a Grammy nomination, celebrated for challenging expectations of race and genre in classical music. Through their non-profit organization Black Violin Foundation, they mentor young musicians and advocate for arts education, using their platform to promote inclusion and creativity.
