Bobby Weir (full name Robert Hall Weir, born October 16, 1947, in San Francisco, California) is a founding member of the legendary Grateful Dead and one of the most influential figures in American rock history. As the band’s rhythm guitarist and co-vocalist, Weir helped define the sound of the psychedelic and jam-band movement of the late 1960s, blending folk, blues, and improvisational rock into a genre that became a cultural phenomenon.
At just 16 years old, Weir co-founded the Grateful Dead with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, performing at the heart of San Francisco’s counterculture revolution. His distinctive guitar style — intricate, syncopated, and rhythmically adventurous — became an essential element of the Dead’s unique sound. Songs like “Sugar Magnolia,” “Truckin’,” “One More Saturday Night,” and “Playing in the Band” cemented his place in rock history.
Following the Grateful Dead’s dissolution in 1995, Weir remained a central figure in keeping their legacy alive. He went on to form RatDog, a jazz-rock fusion group, and later co-founded Dead & Company with John Mayer, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann, touring to massive sold-out audiences and introducing a new generation to the Dead’s music.
In addition to his work with the Grateful Dead family, Weir has released several solo albums, including “Ace” (1972) and “Blue Mountain” (2016), which showcase his versatility as a songwriter and storyteller. His music combines Americana, country, and jam influences, offering both reflection and vitality.
Weir has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and honored with numerous awards recognizing his artistic and cultural impact. On stage, his performances remain dynamic and heartfelt — a blend of nostalgia, virtuosity, and living history.
With over six decades of musical innovation and an unwavering commitment to authenticity, Bobby Weir continues to be a beacon of creativity and connection in the global music landscape.
