About Desiree RSA
Biography / Discography
DESIREE, professionally known by her stage name and legally named Palesa Desiree Shilabje, is a South African DJ and producer from Ivory Park, a township in Johannesburg. Emerging as one of the international electronic music scene’s most notable voices, she is recognized for her ability to synthesize Afro house with pan-global house and techno influences, moving fluidly between electro, afrobeats, kwaito, gqom, and amapiano in her sets and productions.
After studying politics, philosophy, and economics at the University of the Witwatersrand, Shilabje discovered electronic music during university nightlife experiences and shifted her creative path. She began performing at venues including Kitchener’s Carvery Bar in Johannesburg before gaining international recognition through a nonprofit initiative supporting female DJs across Southern Africa in 2019. Her first major-label release, the ‘Femme Tech’ EP on Jackie Queens’ Bae Electronica, arrived in June 2022 to significant critical acclaim, with the title track achieving widespread playlist placement. In 2023, she received DJ Mag’s Future Star award and established international residencies at venues including DC-10 in Ibiza and Avant Gardner in New York. Her remixes and original productions emphasize fluid, groove-oriented production that emphasizes hip and waist movement on the dance floor, reflecting South African club culture’s rhythmic aesthetic. She has performed at major international festivals including Eletrico Festival (Portugal), Greenfields Open Air (Germany), and Innervisions New York.
Beyond her artistic practice, Shilabje is an outspoken advocate for marginalized communities in electronic music, publicly sharing her intersex identity and founding inclusive music initiatives including the MMINO event series in Cape Town, designed to unite divided South African communities and expand musical horizons within local electronic music culture.
