About Gwenno
Biography / Discography
Gwenno Mererid Saunders, known professionally as Gwenno, is a Welsh-Cornish electropop musician who has achieved critical acclaim for her experimental approach to songwriting in minority languages. Born in Cardiff on 23 May 1981, she is a solo artist who composes and performs primarily in Cornish and Welsh, with work often labeled as electropop, indietronica, and hauntology.
Saunders began her music career in the early 2000s as a solo electropop artist in Welsh and Cornish languages, releasing EPs including Môr Hud (2002) and Vodya (2004). From 2005 to the early 2010s, she was a vocalist with the indie pop band The Pipettes, contributing to their critically praised debut album We Are the Pipettes. Her solo career resumed in 2014 with the Welsh-language album Y Dydd Olaf, which won the Welsh Music Prize and Best Welsh Album at the 2015 National Eisteddfod. She followed with Le Kov (2018), an album entirely in Cornish that was named one of the year’s best by The Guardian, Uncut, and Mojo. Her third album, Tresor (2022), also in Cornish, earned a Mercury Prize nomination and further recognition from BBC Radio 6 Music.
In 2025, Gwenno released her fourth solo album, Utopia, marking a shift toward primarily English-language compositions. Throughout her career, she has toured extensively across Europe and Australia, performing at major festivals and supporting established acts including Suede and the Manic Street Preachers. Her work has contributed to heightened interest in Cornish language education, with the Cornish Language Board noting a 15% increase in language exam participants following the release of Le Kov.
