Born on June 18, 1963, in Detroit, Michigan, Mills began his career as a radio DJ in the early 1980s, spinning and mixing tracks on WJLB under the alias “The Wizard.” His innovative techniques and eclectic sets quickly gained him a loyal following, setting the stage for his future success.
In the late 1980s, Mills co-founded the influential techno collective Underground Resistance, alongside “Mad” Mike Banks. The group was known for its unyielding approaches to music production and its militant stance on artist independence. This period saw the release of several classic tracks such as “The Seawolf” and “Waveform,” solidifying Mills’ position as a driving force in techno music.
As a solo artist, Jeff Mills launched his own label, Axis Records, in 1992.
