Martin David Fry is an English singer and the co-founder and lead vocalist of the synth-pop band ABC. Born on March 9, 1958, in Lancashire, Fry formed ABC in 1978 from the electronic band Vice Versa alongside Mark White and Stephen Singleton. Throughout the band’s history, Fry has remained its only constant member and has been its sole official member since the band’s evolution.
ABC achieved significant commercial success during the 1980s, releasing six studio albums between 1982 and 1991 and earning six top-20 UK singles. The band was categorized alongside Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, and The Human League as part of the new wave and synth-pop movement. Their most celebrated tracks include “Poison Arrow,” “The Look of Love,” and “All of My Heart,” which became defining songs of the era. Fry’s distinctive vocal presence became integral to the band’s sound and popularity.
Beyond his primary work with ABC, Fry has pursued diverse musical projects. He performed the Thunderball theme for David Arnold’s James Bond tribute album and served as a vocal coach for the 2007 film “Music and Lyrics.” ABC continued to record and perform into the 21st century, with their 2016 album “The Lexicon of Love II” reaching number 5 on the UK Albums Chart—their highest chart position since 1982. The band has performed at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, where they appeared with the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2009.
