About Racey
Biography / Discography
Racey are an English pop/rock group formed in 1976 in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, by Clive Wilson and Phil Fursdon. The original lineup included Richard Gower on vocals and keyboards, and Pete Miller on bass. The band quickly gained attention and achieved significant chart success in the late 1970s and early 1980s, becoming known for energetic pop-rock hits produced and written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn.
The group made their mark with three major singles: “Baby It’s You” (1978), “Lay Your Love on Me” (1978, peaking at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart), and “Some Girls” (1979, reaching number 2). Their 1979 debut album Smash and Grab became a landmark pop-rock release, including the track “Kitty,” which gained international recognition when Toni Basil reworked it as “Mickey” in 1981, which became a worldwide hit.
Following their split in 1985, Racey reunited in 1990 and have remained active since, with two separate lineups continuing to perform. Richard Gower has led one version of the group, while Clive Wilson and Phil Fursdon have maintained another. The band continues to perform and record, releasing new material including “It’s a Glorious Day” in August 2021.
