Sandra Ann Lauer, known mononymously as Sandra, is a German pop and synth-pop singer from Saarbrücken who rose to prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s as one of Continental Europe’s most successful vocalists. She is best known for a series of European chart-topping singles produced with her then-husband and musical partner Michael Cretu, including “(I’ll Never Be) Maria Magdalena” (1985), “In the Heat of the Night” (1985), “Secret Land” (1988), and “Hiroshima” (1990). With sales exceeding 33 million records worldwide, she has established herself as the most successful German female vocalist of her generation.
Prior to her solo career, Sandra was lead vocalist of Arabesque, an all-female disco trio that achieved significant commercial success in Japan and the Soviet Union during the late 1970s and early 1980s. After the group disbanded in the mid-1980s, Sandra relocated to Munich with keyboardist Michael Cretu, whom she had met during her time with Arabesque and would later marry.
Sandra’s solo debut album The Long Play (1985) launched her international career, followed by successful releases including Mirrors (1986), Into a Secret Land (1988), and Paintings in Yellow (1990). Her 1992 album Close to Seven marked a shift toward a more mature pop sound.
