Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, known professionally as Sting, is an English musician, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He rose to prominence as the bassist, principal songwriter, and frontman of the new wave band The Police, which was active from 1977 through 1984 before its initial dissolution. The band reunited briefly in 1986 and again for an extended tour from 2007 to 2008. Since 1985, Sting has maintained a prolific solo career, exploring musical styles including rock, jazz, reggae, classical, and worldbeat influences.
His work across both his Police and solo careers has achieved significant commercial and critical recognition. Sting has sold over 100 million records, received 17 Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 and has received numerous honors including a CBE, a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, Kennedy Center Honors, and the Ivor Novello Fellowship. His solo recordings span multiple decades and genres, reflecting his exploration of diverse musical traditions and collaborations.
