Biography / Discography
The Sugarhill Gang is an American hip-hop group established in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1979. Producer Sylvia Robinson assembled three rappers—Henry Jackson (known as “Big Bank Hank”), Michael Wright (“Wonder Mike”), and Guy O’Brien (“Master Gee”)—whose old-school hip-hop sound drew from disco, funk, and soul samples to create a blueprint for electro and East Coast hip-hop. Their 1979 single “Rapper’s Delight” became the first rap record to reach the Billboard Hot 100’s top 40, peaking at number 36 in January 1980, securing their place as hip-hop pioneers.
Despite “Rapper’s Delight” being their sole major U.S. hit, the trio found commercial success in European markets during the early 1980s, releasing singles such as “Apache,” “8th Wonder,” and “Showdown” with the Furious Five. The group dissolved in 1985, briefly reunited in 1990 for a concert at the Apollo Theater, and reorganized in 1994. Their later output included the children’s album Jump On It! (1999) and a 2009 collaboration with producer Bob Sinclar on “Lala Song.”
The Sugarhill Gang marked four decades since their debut with the “Rapper’s Delight 40th Anniversary World Tour” in 2019, underscoring their legacy as architects of rap’s commercial breakthrough.
