The electronic dance music band The Prodigy was established in Braintree, Essex, in 1990 by Liam Howlett, a producer, keyboardist, and songwriter. The original lineup included Keith Flint as a dancer and vocalist, Leeroy Thornhill as a dancer and live keyboardist, Sharky as a dancer, and Maxim as an MC and vocalist. They are credited as innovators of the big beat genre with breakbeat influences and label their music style as electronic punk.

Originating from the underground rave scene, the band gained early recognition in 1991 through their first singles “Charly” and “Everybody in the Place,” both achieving top five positions in the UK charts. Transitioning from their rave beginnings, they explored techno, breakbeat, and rock elements in their second album, Music for the Jilted Generation (1994), which received critical acclaim. Their peak success came with their third studio album, The Fat of the Land (1997), topping charts in 16 countries, producing UK number one singles “Firestarter” and “Breathe” in 1996. Despite controversy surrounding the suggestive lyrics and music video of the third single “Smack My Bitch Up,” it also became a UK top ten hit. Following the departure of Thornhill in 2000 and Flint’s tragic passing in 2019, Howlett and Maxim remain as the sole original members of the band.
