Biography / Discography
Anita Ward is an American disco and R&B singer from Memphis, Tennessee, best known for her 1979 million-selling chart-topper Ring My Bell, which reached number one on the US Hot 100, R&B, Dance, and UK Singles charts. Beginning her professional music career in the late 1970s, Ward was a schoolteacher before signing with a record label where she was presented with the song that would define her career. The track, originally written as a juvenile-targeted tune about teenage telephone conversations, was rewritten with more mature lyrics to capitalize on the disco trend.
Ward released her debut album Songs of Love in 1979, the same year Ring My Bell achieved massive chart success. She followed with a second album Sweet Surrender later that year, which featured the minor hit Don’t Drop My Love (No. 87 on the US Billboard Hot 100). Both albums were disco-infused, though a planned third album was canceled due to contractual disputes and changing industry conditions. A severe car accident and the declining popularity of disco music contributed to a lengthy career hiatus.
Ward returned to recording in 1989 with the album Wherever There’s Love, a departure from her disco roots that blended 1980s pop with ballads, including a re-recorded version of Ring My Bell. In recent years, she has returned to performing, appearing at disco-era nostalgia events and festivals, and was featured in the 2024 PBS series Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution.
