Bananarama are an Irish-English pop group formed in London in 1980. The ensemble originally consisted of friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey, and Keren Woodward. Jacquie O’Sullivan joined as the fourth member in 1988 following Fahey’s departure to form Shakespears Sister. After O’Sullivan left in 1991, Dallin and Woodward continued as a duo, briefly reuniting with Fahey for a tour in 2017.
The group achieved exceptional commercial success across pop and dance markets, earning inclusion in Guinness World Records for the highest number of chart entries by an all-female group. Between 1982 and 2009, they placed 32 singles in the UK Top 50. Notable tracks include ‘Really Saying Something’ and ‘Shy Boy’ (both 1982), ‘Cruel Summer’ (1983, later remixed as ‘Cruel Summer ’89’ in 1989), ‘Venus’ (1986), which became their only US number-one hit, and ‘Love in the First Degree’ and ‘I Heard a Rumour’ (both 1987).
