Founded by Norman Cook—who would later establish himself as electronic music producer Fatboy Slim—the group represented a loose confederation of musicians blending dance, hip-hop, dub, and reggae influences. They achieved their peak commercial success with the 1990 UK number-one single “Dub Be Good to Me”, a creative sample-based reworking of The SOS Band’s “Just Be Good to Me” that incorporated elements from The Clash’s “Guns of Brixton”.
The collective’s core lineup featured vocalist Lindy Layton, rappers DJ Baptiste (The Crazy MC) and MC Wildski, keyboardist Andy Boucher, and vocalist Lester Noel. Their live performances were visually distinctive, incorporating graffiti artist REQ who created designs on stage backdrops during performances. The group’s debut album, Let Them Eat Bingo (1990), combined Cook’s earlier solo releases with fresh material and featured the successful singles “Won’t Talk About It” and “Burundi Blues”, establishing their innovative approach to sampling and sonic layering.
Beats International released their second album, Excursion on the Version, in 1991, which deepened their exploration of dub and reggae textures but did not replicate the commercial impact of their debut.
