Chicago is an American rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1967, initially calling themselves the Big Thing before adopting the Chicago Transit Authority name in 1968 and shortening to Chicago in 1969. Self-described as a “rock and roll band with horns,” the group grew out of the Chicago music scene and established themselves as pioneers by blending rock with classical music, jazz, R&B, and pop influences. The original lineup featured Peter Cetera (bass, vocals), Terry Kath (guitar, vocals), Robert Lamm (keyboards, vocals), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), James Pankow (trombone), Walter Parazaider (woodwinds), and Danny Seraphine (drums).
Chicago achieved extraordinary commercial success, becoming one of the longest-running and best-selling rock groups of all time with over 100 million records sold worldwide. In 1971, they became the first rock act to sell out Carnegie Hall for a week. The band earned 23 gold, 18 platinum, and eight multi-platinum albums in the US, with five consecutive number-one albums on the Billboard 200 and 20 top-ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100. They received ten Grammy Award nominations, winning for “If You Leave Me Now,” and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2017, Peter Cetera, Robert Lamm, and James Pankow were elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Chicago also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
