The Airborne Toxic Event is an American rock and indie band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2006. The band’s name derives from a section in Don DeLillo’s postmodern novel White Noise. The current lineup consists of Mikel Jollett (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steven Chen (guitar, keyboards), Adrian Rodriguez (electric bass, backing vocals), Daren Taylor (drums), and Miriam “Mimi” Peschet (backing vocals, violin). The group is distinguished by its blend of rock music with orchestral arrangements, frequently performing with string ensembles including the Calder Quartet.
The band’s debut album, The Airborne Toxic Event, was released on August 5, 2008, to mostly favorable reviews from major publications. The lead single “Sometime Around Midnight” became a breakthrough hit, achieving the No. 1 spot on iTunes’ Best Alternative Songs of 2008 list and peaking at No. 4 on Alternative Radio charts while selling over 400,000 copies. The album spent eight weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Chart and has sold over 200,000 copies domestically and 300,000 worldwide. The band embarked on extensive touring throughout 2008 and 2009, performing at major festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Reading and Leeds.
The Airborne Toxic Event released its second album, All at Once, in April 2011, produced by Dave Sardy. The band has performed with notable orchestras including the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Louisville Orchestra.
