Don McLean

Don McLean is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his iconic 1971 folk rock song “American Pie,” an eight-and-a-half-minute track that has been called a cultural touchstone and remains one of the greatest compositions in rock history. Born Donald McLean III in New Rochelle, New York, on October 2, 1945, McLean is professionally known by the titles “American Troubadour” and “King of the Trail.” Beyond “American Pie,” his most celebrated compositions include “Vincent,” a tribute to painter Vincent van Gogh, and “And I Love You So,” which became a number-one Adult Contemporary hit when recorded by Perry Como.

McLean’s recording career began with his 1969 debut album Tapestry, which attracted critical acclaim within folk circles but limited commercial notice. His major breakthrough came with the 1971 album American Pie, which launched two number-one hits in the title track and “Vincent.” “American Pie” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1972 and remains certified six-times Platinum by the RIAA. The song drew inspiration partly from the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson, and popularized the phrase “The Day the Music Died.” In 2004, McLean was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 2021, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

McLean became a major concert attraction worldwide, with critically acclaimed performances at Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall beginning in 1972. Though subsequent studio albums did not replicate American Pie’s commercial success, he has remained an active touring artist across North America, Europe, and Australia. His music, primarily rooted in folk rock while incorporating country and easy-listening elements, has been recorded by numerous artists including Elvis Presley, Helen Reddy, Glen Campbell, Madonna, and Drake.
