Electric Light Orchestra, often abbreviated as ELO, are an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1970 by Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood. Also known as The Electric Light Orchestra, they pioneered a distinctive fusion of rock and pop with classical orchestral elements, combining electric guitars with strings and synthesizers to create a theatrical and grandiose sound.
During the 1970s and 1980s, ELO achieved massive commercial success with multiple platinum albums dominating both British and American charts. Their most commercially successful album, the double album Out of the Blue (1977), led to a groundbreaking world tour. Subsequent releases including the disco-influenced Discovery (1979) and the science-fiction concept album Time (1981) both reached number one on the UK charts. The band accumulated over 50 million album sales worldwide and earned numerous awards including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
After disbanding in 1986, the group reunited briefly from 2000 to 2001 and reformed again in 2014 as Jeff Lynne’s ELO with longtime member Richard Tandy. Following Tandy’s death in May 2024, the band undertook their final tour, cementing their legacy as innovators in orchestral rock and purveyors of enduring hit songs.
