About Ely Buendia
Biography / Discography
Ely Buendia is a Filipino rock musician, songwriter, film director, and record label owner born November 2, 1970 in Naga, Camarines Sur. He gained prominence as the guitarist, lead vocalist and primary songwriter of the Eraserheads, the most influential rock band in Philippine popular music, whose debut album Ultraelectromagneticpop! was released in 1993. With Eraserheads, Buendia achieved international recognition, notably winning MTV Asia’s Viewer’s Choice Award at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards in New York for the music video of Ang Huling El Bimbo, making the band the only Philippine artists to receive the award at that ceremony.
Following his departure from Eraserheads in 2002, Buendia continued prolific musical work through multiple projects. He formed The Mongols (under the stage name Jesus “Dizzy” Ventura) in 2002, releasing Buddha’s Pest in 2003, and later transitioned the group to Pupil in 2005, recording four studio albums through 2015. In 2011, he formed The Oktaves, a supergroup collaboration, and in 2016 founded Apartel, a soul and R&B band, alongside establishing Offshore Music, an independent record label partnered with Sony Music Philippines. His solo releases include Wanted Bedspacer (2000) and Method Adaptor (2024). Beyond music, Buendia has directed the short film Waiting Shed (2010) and co-directed the crime anthology Bang Bang Alley (2013). He remains active in live performance and continues to collaborate with artists across multiple genres.
