Haddaway, born Nestor Alexander Haddaway (also recorded as Nester Alexander Haddaway), is a Trinidadian-American singer and songwriter long based in Germany, recognized as one of the defining voices of 1990s Eurodance. He is best known worldwide for his 1993 single “What Is Love”, which reached number one in thirteen countries and became a genre-defining dance anthem.
Haddaway signed to the Cologne-based label Coconut Records in 1992. “What Is Love” sold roughly 2.6 million copies by early 1994, peaking at number two in Germany and the UK and number eleven on the US Billboard Hot 100. His debut album was certified platinum in Germany and gold in the UK and France, and spawned further singles including “Life”, “I Miss You” and “Rock My Heart”. His second album, The Drive (1995), produced the UK top-20 hit “Fly Away”.
