Hazell Dean (born Hazel Diane Poole, 27 October 1952) is an English dance-pop and hi-NRG singer who achieved her greatest success during the 1980s. Known professionally by her distinctive stage name Hazell Dean (adopted around 1980), she is best known for the UK top-ten hits “Searchin’ (I Gotta Find a Man)”, “Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)” and “Who’s Leaving Who”. Dean has also worked as a songwriter and producer throughout her career.
Born in Great Baddow, Essex, Dean began recording in the early 1970s with limited chart success. Through the late 1970s and early 1980s, she built a strong following as a club performer, particularly in gay venues and on the dance scene, developing her signature hi-NRG sound. Her commercial breakthrough came in 1984 when “Searchin’” was re-released and climbed to number 6 on the UK Singles Chart.
Dean’s peak years spanned the mid-to-late 1980s, during which she scored multiple top-ten hits produced by Stock Aitken Waterman and others, and released the albums Heart First (1984) and Always (1988). Subsequent releases included The Winner Takes It All (1996) and more recent projects In the Name of… (2013) and Nightlife (2015). After decades of touring, she announced her retirement from live performing in August 2021, though she continues recording and remains available for select festival performances and corporate bookings.
