Kadim Al Sahir (Arabic: كاظم الساهر; also known as Kadim Al Saher, Kazim Al Sahir, and professionally dubbed “The Caesar”) is a solo Iraqi vocalist and composer born September 12, 1957, in Mosul. A classical crossover and operatic pop artist, he is known for fusing traditional Arabic melodies and instrumentation with diverse international musical forms, performing across multiple Arabic dialects and collaborating with orchestral arrangements featuring oud, qanun, nay, and other traditional Arabic percussion alongside Western instruments.
Al Sahir began his music career in 1980 as a teacher and formally studied at Baghdad’s Institute of Music. His professional recording career launched in 1987 and quickly expanded internationally. He has released over 40 studio albums between 1984 and 2024, including landmark releases such as “The Olive Tree” (1984), “Gazelle” (1989), and “The Book of Love” (2016). His catalog includes more than 40 hit songs, with “Me and Layla,” “Get Well Soon,” and “Don’t Sigh” achieving major regional success. Al Sahir has sold over 100 million albums worldwide and has performed at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House, Beacon Theatre in New York, Circus Maximus in Rome, and Hammersmith Apollo.
Beyond his solo work, Al Sahir is recognized for substantial international collaborations, having worked with producer Quincy Jones, soprano Sarah Brightman (“The War Is Over,” 2003), Lenny Kravitz (“We Want Peace,” 2004), and forming a legendary songwriting partnership with Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani from 1996 onwards, which yielded over 30 compositions. He earned the UNICEF Award in 1998 for the song “Tathakkar” and was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Iraq in 2011.
