Mezzoforte is an Icelandic instrumental jazz-funk fusion band formed in 1977. The ensemble’s name derives from the musical term “mezzo forte,” meaning “moderately loud.” Comprising skilled musicians on keyboards, bass, drums, and guitars, the group has maintained their identity as an instrumental ensemble, blending jazz and funk influences into distinctive fusion compositions.
The band achieved commercial prominence in 1983 with their album Surprise Surprise, which featured the breakthrough single “Garden Party.” The track reached number 17 on the UK Singles Chart and featured a notable flugelhorn solo by English trumpeter Stephen Dawson. A second single, “Rockall,” achieved UK chart placement at number 75 in June 1983 and subsequently became a signature theme for European radio programming. The original 1977 lineup included Eyþór Gunnarsson (keyboards), Jóhann Ásmundsson (bass), Gunnlaugur Briem (drums), and Friðrik Karlsson (guitar).
Throughout their career, Mezzoforte has evolved with membership changes while maintaining their core instrumental jazz-funk fusion approach. Current notable members include Sebastian Studnitzky (trumpet and keyboards, since 2005) and Jonas Wall (saxophones, since 2013).
