Rick Astley (Richard Paul Astley) is an English singer, songwriter, radio DJ and podcaster. Born in 1966 in Newton-le-Willows, England, Astley rose to prominence in the late 1980s working with production team Stock Aitken Waterman, becoming one of the most commercially successful synthpop and dance-pop acts of the era.
His 1987 debut album Whenever You Need Somebody sold 15 million copies worldwide and was certified platinum. The album’s lead single “Never Gonna Give You Up” became a global phenomenon, reaching number one in over 25 countries and topping the UK chart for five weeks—making it the best-selling single of 1987. The song earned the 1988 Brit Award for Best British Single. His follow-up single “Together Forever” also topped the US Billboard Hot 100, while eight of his songs reached the UK Top 10. The 1988 album Hold Me in Your Arms achieved similar commercial success.
Astley left Stock Aitken Waterman in 1991 to pursue a soul-influenced direction, with “Cry for Help” becoming his last UK and US Top 10 hit. He stepped back from the music industry in 1993 before returning in 2000. Albums followed including 50 (2016), which debuted at UK number one to mark his 50th birthday, and Are We There Yet? (2023).
