Sarah Brightman is an English classical crossover soprano born in Berkhamsted in 1960. She is one of the world’s best-selling sopranos, with over 25 million albums sold and more than 200 gold and platinum awards in 38 countries. Brightman pioneered the classical crossover genre, blending classical vocal tradition with contemporary music production.
Brightman began her professional career as a dancer with the Hot Gossip troupe in the late 1970s, transitioning to solo disco recordings. Her breakthrough came with her 1981 West End musical theatre debut in Cats. She starred in several major theatrical productions, most notably originating the role of Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera. The original 1987 London cast album became the best-selling cast recording in history, with over 40 million copies sold worldwide.
After her stage performing career, Brightman established herself as a recording artist and classical crossover specialist, working with producer Frank Peterson. Her 1996 duet with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, “Time to Say Goodbye,” became a global phenomenon, selling 12 million copies and spending 14 consecutive weeks at number one in Germany. The song established the commercial viability of classical crossover music on a global scale.
