About Showaddywaddy
Biography / Discography
Showaddywaddy are a British rock and roll revival band from Leicester, England, formed in 1973 from the merger of two local groups, Choise and the Golden Hammers. The eight-piece lineup, unusual for featuring two vocalists, two drummers, two guitarists and two bassists, built its reputation on high-energy covers of 1950s and early-1960s rock and roll hits alongside original material.
The band made their professional debut at the Dreamland Ballroom in Margate on 1 September 1973 and went on to spend 209 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, scoring ten top-ten singles. Their breakthrough came with Hey Rock and Roll, which reached number two in 1974, followed by seven consecutive top-five entries. Their only number-one hit, Under the Moon of Love, was released in 1976 and became their biggest seller with around 985,000 copies sold in the UK.
Many of the group’s recordings, including covers of songs originally by Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, Curtis Lee and Chubby Checker, were produced by Mike Hurst, formerly of the Springfields. Longtime lead singer Dave Bartram fronted the band for 38 years before stepping back from performing in December 2011, remaining involved as manager. Showaddywaddy marked their 40th anniversary in 2013 with a career-spanning box set and continue to tour extensively across the UK and Europe, and are available to book for festivals, corporate events and private shows.
