About The Mars Volta
Biography / Discography
The Mars Volta is an American progressive rock band formed in 2001 in El Paso, Texas, blending progressive rock, art rock, and post-hardcore. The group is built around the songwriting partnership of guitarist and producer Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and vocalist and lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, who previously played together in the post-hardcore band At the Drive-In. The Mars Volta is known for dense, concept-driven albums and an ambitious, genre-blending sound rooted in progressive and Latin rock influences.
The band released its debut EP, Tremulant, in 2002, followed by the Rick Rubin-produced full-length De-Loused in the Comatorium in 2003. Its 2005 album Frances the Mute reached number four on the Billboard 200 and was certified Gold in the United States. Subsequent studio albums include Amputechture (2006), The Bedlam in Goliath (2008), Octahedron (2009), and Noctourniquet (2012). The single “Wax Simulacra,” from The Bedlam in Goliath, won the Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2009.
The band went on hiatus in 2012 and formally disbanded in 2013 before reuniting in 2019, the same year they released a self-titled sixth studio album. They announced a fuller return to activity in 2022 and have continued to tour and release new material since. The Mars Volta is available to book for festivals, corporate events, and private shows.
