About Bobby Kimball Toto
Biography / Discography
Bobby Kimball is an American rock singer best known as the original frontman of the rock band Toto. Born March 29, 1947, in Orange, Texas, he served as Toto’s lead vocalist from 1977 to 1984 and again from 1998 to 2008. His distinctive bluesy vocal style, rooted in Louisiana R&B and soul influences, became a defining element of Toto’s signature sound.
Kimball began his professional music career in the early 1970s, performing with New Orleans-area bands before relocating to Los Angeles in 1974. In 1976, he auditioned for and was selected by David Paich and Jeff Porcaro to join Toto. He performed on the band’s first four studio albums, including the self-titled debut (1978) and the multi-platinum Toto IV (1982), contributing as both vocalist and songwriter to several tracks.
After leaving Toto in 1984, Kimball released the solo albums Rise Up (1994) and All I Ever Needed (1999), while maintaining an active touring and session career. He rejoined Toto in 1998 and contributed to the album Mindfields (1999), continuing with the band through 2008. Beyond his work with Toto, Kimball has collaborated with artists including Chicago and participated in rock tribute projects and touring as a solo performer.
