Evanescence is an American rock band formed in 1994 in Little Rock, Arkansas, by singer and keyboardist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. Classified as gothic alternative metal and hard rock, the band incorporates classical music, heavy metal, industrial, and electronic elements. Beginning as a duo, Evanescence expanded to a full band lineup in 2009 and has since become one of the best-selling hard rock and metal acts of all time.
Evanescence achieved mainstream breakthrough with their 2003 debut album Fallen on Wind-up Records. Propelled by hit singles including “Bring Me to Life” and “My Immortal”, Fallen sold more than four million copies in the US by early 2004 and earned the band two Grammy Awards from six nominations. Their second studio album, The Open Door, followed in 2006, earning a Grammy nomination and selling more than six million copies worldwide. In 2011, the band released their self-titled third album, marking the first album co-written collaboratively by the full ensemble, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
After becoming independent in 2014, Evanescence released Synthesis in 2017 (orchestral arrangements performed with live orchestras), The Bitter Truth in 2021, and Sanctuary in 2026. The band has sold a total of 31.9 million albums globally and received multiple accolades including Grammy Awards, Loudwire Music Awards, and MTV Video Music Award nominations. Evanescence remains available for festivals, corporate events, and touring engagements.
