The Flying Pickets are a British a cappella vocal group formed in 1982, originating from members of John McGrath’s 7:84 theatre organization. Founded by Brian Hibbard, the ensemble gained international recognition through their innovative vocal arrangements and theatrical presentation. The group achieved their greatest commercial success in 1983 with a cover of Yazoo’s “Only You,” which topped the UK Singles Chart and held the Christmas number one position. The single reached number 17 in Canada, establishing the group’s profile beyond Britain. A second release, a Van McCoy cover, reached number 7 on the UK charts, but subsequent singles performed less successfully commercially.
Throughout the 1980s, The Flying Pickets combined musical performance with political activism, particularly during the 1984 UK miners’ strike, where they organized benefit concerts and actively supported striking workers. The group became known for their distinctive visual style, featuring bold fashion choices and theatrical presentation that complemented their a cappella arrangements. While the original lineup dispersed after 1990, the ensemble has maintained an active presence, recording new material and performing across Europe and internationally.
