About Imagination band
Biography / Discography
Imagination is an English soul/funk trio formed in London in 1981, comprising Leee John (vocals/keyboards), Ashley Ingram (guitar/bass), and Errol Kennedy (drums). The band rose to prominence in the early 1980s with a series of chart-topping hits across 28 countries, establishing themselves as one of the defining dance-soul acts of the decade. They are best known for their signature tracks “Just an Illusion,” which peaked at number two in the UK, and “Music and Lights,” which reached number five.
Imagination released their debut album Body Talk in 1981, featuring the hit single of the same name reaching number four on the UK charts. Subsequent albums including In the Heat of the Night (1982), Scandalous (1983), Trilogy (1986), and Closer (1987) solidified their commercial success. By the end of 1983, the band had earned four platinum discs, nine gold discs, and more than a dozen silver discs worldwide. Their distinctive aesthetic—inspired by exotic costume design—and frequent appearances on Top of the Pops made them iconic figures in 1980s pop culture.
While the band’s UK chart presence declined after the mid-1980s, they continued recording and touring internationally. Following the departure of Ingram and Kennedy in 1987, Leee John pursued new musical directions with different lineups, releasing The Fascination of the Physical in 1992 before the band dissolved that year. The group reunited in later years, releasing the album Retropia in 2016. Imagination remains available for festivals, corporate events, and live performances.
