Jacqueline ‘Jaki’ Graham is a British soul and pop singer born in Birmingham in 1956 to Jamaican parents. She rose to prominence in the mid-1980s with a series of UK chart hits, establishing herself as one of Britain’s most successful soul and dance-pop artists of that era.
Discovered by a talent scout and signed to EMI Records in 1983, Graham achieved her breakthrough in 1985 with the duet ‘Could It Be I’m Falling in Love’ alongside David Grant, which reached number 5 on the UK charts. Over the following two years, she scored five additional UK top-20 singles, including ‘Set Me Free’ (number 7), ‘Round and Around’ (UK top 10), and ‘Step Right Up’, establishing her as a fixture on British radio and television. During this period, American artist Michael McDonald praised her talent, later collaborating with her and featuring her on his UK tours.
Graham’s international profile expanded in the 1990s. In 1994, her cover of Chaka Khan’s ‘Ain’t Nobody’ became her most successful international single, reaching number 1 on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart where it remained for five weeks. She has since performed with major acts including Michael McDonald, Al Green, and Cliff Richard, and continues to record and perform.
