About Musical Youth
Biography / Discography
Musical Youth is a British reggae band formed in 1979 in Birmingham, England. The group was created by the fathers of Kelvin and Michael Grant, and Junior and Patrick Waite, who assembled their sons into a musical ensemble. Musical Youth achieved international recognition with their 1982 single ‘Pass the Dutchie,’ adapted from the Mighty Diamonds’ ‘Pass the Kouchie,’ which became a number-one hit across multiple countries and sold over four million copies. The band also became the first Black act to have a music video broadcast on the newly launched MTV channel.
Their debut album The Youth of Today, released in 1982, charted in the top 40 in the UK, West Germany, and the US, earning gold certification in the UK and Canada. Subsequent singles ‘Youth of Today’ and ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ achieved top-20 success in the UK. The band collaborated with Donna Summer on ‘Unconditional Love’ and released a second album, Different Style!, in 1983, showcasing an R&B-influenced direction. They received a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist at the 26th Grammy Awards. Commercial decline followed in the mid-1980s, leading to the band’s breakup in 1985.
Musical Youth reformed in 2001 as a duo featuring original members Dennis Seaton and Michael Grant, continuing to perform internationally at festivals and special events. The reunited group has released new material alongside re-recorded versions of their classic hits, remaining active in the music industry.
