Nazareth is a Scottish hard rock band formed in December 1968 in Dunfermline by vocalist Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew, and drummer Darrell Sweet. The band emerged from the remnants of the Shadettes, a local group, drawing inspiration from the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Their name came from Nazareth, Pennsylvania, referenced in The Band’s song “The Weight”. The band’s blues-based hard rock style and McCafferty’s distinctive vocal delivery became their signature sound.
Following their 1971 self-titled debut, Nazareth achieved major success throughout the 1970s with critically acclaimed albums including Razamanaz (1973), Loud ‘N’ Proud (1973), and Rampant (1974), yielding multiple UK Top 10 hits such as “Broken Down Angel,” “Bad Bad Boy,” and a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “This Flight Tonight.” Their 1975 album Hair of the Dog became their most commercially successful release; the title track became a staple of 1970s rock radio, while their cover of “Love Hurts” achieved international success, reaching number one in six countries and becoming their only US Top 10 hit. The song went platinum and charted for 60 weeks in Norway.
Nazareth continued recording and touring through subsequent decades with sustained popularity in Europe, particularly Germany. Despite losses of original members and various lineup changes over the years, the band persists as an active touring act with rotating vocalists, demonstrating enduring appeal to rock audiences worldwide.
