Patrick Pierre Hernandez is a French disco singer who achieved international fame with his 1979 hit ‘Born to Be Alive.’ Born on April 6, 1949, in Le Blanc-Mesnil, France, Hernandez developed his musical career through touring dance halls in southern France during the 1960s before gaining his breakthrough in 1978 under producer Jean Vanloo.
His signature track ‘Born to Be Alive’ was released in November 1978 and reached number one in France by April 1979. The disco single became a global phenomenon, hitting number one on the US Billboard Disco Chart and reaching number 16 on the Hot 100, with over one million copies sold in the United States alone. The song ultimately earned Hernandez 52 gold and platinum records from more than 50 countries by year’s end. His debut album was a commercial success, winning a Billboard Award in 1980.
Though celebrated as an international disco star, Hernandez became known primarily as a one-hit wonder in the broader market. Follow-up singles such as ‘Disco Queen’ failed to replicate the success of ‘Born to Be Alive,’ and subsequent albums, including 1981’s ‘Goodbye,’ found limited commercial success, particularly in the United States.
