Ricchi e Poveri (meaning The Rich and The Poor) is an Italian pop ensemble formed in Genoa in 1967. The original lineup featured four distinct vocalists: Angela Brambati (soprano), Angelo Sotgiu (tenor), Franco Gatti (bass), and Marina Occhiena (alto). Their distinctive four-part vocal harmonies became their signature sound. The group’s name originated from a description by Roman songwriter Franco Califano, who characterized them as spiritually rich but financially poor.
The group achieved early recognition at the Cantagiro festival in 1968 and became regular competitors at the Sanremo Music Festival from 1970 onward. They represented Italy at the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest with “Questo amore,” placing 12th among 20 competitors. In 1981, vocalist Marina Occhiena departed for a solo career, after which the group continued as a trio. This period marked their greatest commercial success, particularly in Spanish-language markets. Notable hits include “Mamma Maria” (1971), “Made in Italy” (1976), and “Se m’innamoro,” which won the Sanremo Festival in 1985. Their 1981 Spanish recording “Será porque te amo” became iconic across Latin America and the Caribbean, spawning numerous covers and appearing in film soundtracks.
The group achieved over 20 million record sales throughout their multi-decade career. Founding member Franco Gatti retired in 2016 and passed away in October 2022. Ricchi e Poveri reunited briefly in 2020 for Sanremo’s 50th-anniversary celebration and has continued performing, with recent activity including tours in 2023 and participation in Sanremo 2024.
